State congressmen lead challengers in cash race

JACKSON — Mississippi’s congressional incumbents have far more money than their challengers to spend on campaigns as candidates head into the final months before the Nov. 2 election.

The latest finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission show that in the state’s most competitive race in the northern 1st District, Democratic Rep. Travis Childers had $903,469 cash on hand and $100,000 of debt through June 30. Republican Alan Nunnelee reported $233,205 cash and no debt. Nunnelee won a three-person Republican primary in June. Childers didn’t have a primary challenger.

Finance reports on the Federal Election Commission Web site show that in the 4th District in South Mississippi, Democratic Rep. Gene Taylor reported $351,022 cash and no debt. Republican Steven Palazzo reported $26,131 in cash and $32,000 in debt.
