MSU PAC tries to garner political muscles
Some influential Mississippi State University alumni are doing more than hoping to influence history.
Leaders of the four-year-old political action committee say they want to enable their alma mater “to become the most politically powerful force in Mississippi.”
Wilson LaFoe of Jackson, one of its organizers, says Mississippi Coalition for Progress, or Bully Bloc, is about building its forces and using its treasury to be effective.
“Mississippi State has a large alumni group,” LaFoe said last week, “and we wanted an organization to pull them together to get politicians’ attention.”
Bully Bloc was established in 2006 by Haley Fisackerly, now president and CEO of Entergy Mississippi, and Spence Flatgard, a Jackson attorney with a political background, including work for then-U.S. Rep. Roger Wicker of Tupelo.
Before joining Entergy, Fisackerly worked for U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran of Oxford.
LaFoe, chairman of Bully Bloc, said the original group of six or seven wanted to build an organization that would help elected officials better understand what was important for Mississippi State – without the constraints placed on the official MSU hierarchy.
