Reeves’ tiebreaker saves the day for tourism

Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves this week cast his second tiebreaker vote as the presiding officer of the state Senate. Fortunately for Mississippi’s tourism industry, Reeves’ vote kept alive a proposal to delay the start of the public school year until late August.

After Reeves broke the tie vote on a procedural maneuver to kill the bill, senators proceeded to pass it 29-21. It now goes back to the House so representatives can consider changes made in the Senate.

The bill as authored by Rep. Mark Formby, R-Picayune, would have prevented school from starting before the fourth week of August. The Senate changed it to the third week.
