Gulfport calls for annexation truce; Biloxi balks
The city of Gulfport has called for a truce with Biloxi in a legal fight over a small area of land north of Biloxi’s northwest corner that Gulfport tried to annex.
Gulfport leaders passed a resolution that calls for an armistice-signing ceremony on the beach with Biloxi leaders.
But Biloxi officials said Gulfport started the fight and is only offering the truce because it has a weak case and knows Biloxi is liable to be awarded the 2.5 square miles along the Mississippi 605 corridor where a developer plans to build a large subdivision. Biloxi has been embroiled in a similar fight with D’Iberville, which tried to annex land at Biloxi’s northeast corner. A court ruled in Biloxi’s favor in that case, but D’Iberville — which late in the game made a truce offer similar to Gulfport’s — is appealing the ruling.
