Coastal tourism will survive oil threat
BILOXI, Miss. — State efforts and a $500,000 BP PLC advertising campaign will help the Mississippi Gulf Coast tourism industry survive the threat of oil contamination, Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said Wednesday morning.
Bryant spoke during the 11th annual Coastal Development Strategies Conference at the Mississippi Coast Convention Center. The conference continues today with field trips to local historical and research sites.
“I have placed an emphasis on tourism in the state, and I’m going to continue to do that,” he said.
BP has put about $500,000 into an advertising campaign “to say ‘come back to the Gulf Coast,'” Bryant said.
“We don’t want people to panic, and we don’t want people to cancel their reservations and their hotel rooms,” he said. “Don’t leave us. I can assure you, you won’t know this oil spill is occurring.”
