House passes charter schools bill

Senate Bill 2161, which the House passed with added language from a similar version of a House bill, would not only allow students to go outside of their own district to a charter school — with state money following them — but would also remove the requirement that C-rated school districts obtain school board approval before a charter school is allowed to open.

The bill passed 65-41 after several amendments were proposed, including one by state Rep. Tom Miles, D-Forest, to remove C-rated districts.

State Rep. Jay Hughes, D-Oxford, tried unsuccessfully to get an amendment passed to ensure transportation is provided for any student who requests it….

….Senate Bill 2799 — To allow municipalities to lease naming rights on city-owned buildings to private commercial entities. The bill heads to the governor.
