Tea party targets some Dem seats in Miss. House

Tea party conservatives say they’re trying to help flip seven or eight seats in the Mississippi House from Democratic to Republican this fall to give the GOP control of the 122-member chamber for the first time in more than a century.

Republicans already control the Senate and most of the statewide offices. If they win the House majority, they’d have an easier time pushing their legislative agenda.

Democrats say they’re trying to hold on to as many of their current seats as possible and they hope to flip at least a couple of Republican seats their way in the Nov. 8 general election. The party currently holds a 67-54 advantage over Republicans in the Mississippi House, with one seat held by a former Democrat who’s running this year as an independent.

The two parties say anywhere from eight to 20 seats could potentially switch from one party to another this year. Many of them are open because incumbents aren’t seeking re-election.
