The first school day after Brandon Frost was sent home from Maurepas High School for wearing a Colts jersey while his classmates wore black and gold started off with apologies from Principal Steve Vampran for a situation that had “been blown out of proportion,” the 17-year-old senior said.
“He apologized for the way he handled it,” said Frost, who also apologized to Vampran for wearing the blue jersey while other students at the school wore black and gold.
On Friday, Vampran pulled Frost out of his first class of the day after he was spotted wearing the jersey of Colts running back Joseph Addai, a former LSU standout.
Vampran had given students permission to swap their school uniforms for Saints gear earlier in the week in anticipation of Sunday’s Super Bowl. But Frost said the principal told him Friday that he didn’t authorize students to wear Indianapolis Colts attire. Frost, who grew up in Indiana, said the administrator then asked, “If you like Indiana so much, why don’t you go back?”
Then, given the choice between taking off the No. 29 jersey or going home, Frost decided to leave.
But after Livingston Parish School Board member Keith Martin suggested the pair apologize to each other for the incident, and Frost’s story gained national attention with the aid of the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana, Vampran said he was sorry how he had acted, the student said. Vampran could not be reached for comment.
