YP – Commissioner Cain plans to bring “moral rehabilitation” to Mississippi prison system
Burl Cain was recently appointed Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.He brings with him a 40-year career with the Louisiana Department of Corrections where he served as Warden of the Louisiana State Penitentiary for 20 years.
However, Cain did not get his initial start in corrections. He originally had his sights set on teaching agriculture, but that didn’t seem to fit.
“I went to the classroom and lasted three months,” said Cain. He said often times when he speaks to groups, he will ask who is a schoolteacher. He tells them that their jobs are harder than being the warden of a prison.

The last six nights have featured gut wrenching images of major cities in the U.S. in chaos as violent riots seem to be stealing the media narrative from much larger participation in peaceful protests regarding the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.
Monday night, President Donald Trump prioritized order in the nation’s capital following nights of riots and looting, where national monuments were defaced, a historic church was set ablaze, business and personal property were damaged and innocent people were injured.
The President definitively proclaimed that his first and highest duty as President is to defend the country and the American people, adding, “I swore an oath to uphold the laws of our nation, and that is exactly what I will do.”

WLOX – Meridian police officer suspended for allegedly using racial slur
Officer Joey Lawn is accused of calling a black officer the n-word. Lawn is a K-9 supervisor who has been with MPD for over ten years.
Interim Police Chief Charles Coleman said the alleged incident happened in 2018 and recently resurfaced.
“The incident occurred while our K-9 unit was training in Northport, Alabama, in 2018. It resurfaced in February of 2020, causing some workplace friction,” said Coleman.
WDAM – 3 HFD employees on administrative leave for social media posts
Three Hattiesburg Fire Department employees have been placed on administrative leave for posts made on social media.
Hattiesburg Chief Communications Officer Samantha McCain said the posts are being investigated per the department’s standard operating procedures.
WDAM – Band director at PRCC no longer employed after Facebook post ensued backlash
The Pearl River Community College’s (PRCC) band director resigned after backlash on social media. That backlash centered on comments Reuben McDowell made on a Facebook post, regarding a protest in San Diego supporting George Floyd.
Screenshots of McDowell’s comments on the public post show he wrote, “start shootin a few and the rest will scatter.”

YP – Governor Reeves Announces $300 Million Expansion of Nation’s Largest Retailer-Owned Cooperative in DeSoto County
Governor Tate Reeves announced that Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc. (AWG) plans to expand in DeSoto County by constructing a new facility in Hernando. The project will bring over $300 million in investment and 79 new jobs to Mississippi.

WTOK – MSDH to release names of LTC facilities with COVID-19 outbreaks
The Mississippi State Department of Health will begin publishing the names of long-term care facilities which have outbreaks of COVID-19, after a court ruling and a recommendation from the state attorney general.
A recent ruling in Hinds County Chancery Court called for the disclosure in the public interest. That information has been withheld, citing patient privacy.
Beginning Wednesday, the names of the facilities and the county in which they’re located will be posted on the MSDH website and updated daily. The number of cases in each facility will not be made public.
