BRIAN PERRY/Supreme resignations
Two justices on the Mississippi Supreme Court announced their resignations this month. Both were up for re-election next year…
…Mississippi Supreme Court Justices serve eight year terms and resignations are not uncommon. Of the 33 justices who have served on the Court over the past thirty years, roughly 40 percent have resigned early: thirteen resigned and two died before completing their final term; five retired and six were defeated while seeking reelection. As a result, since 1985, half the justices first joined the Court through gubernatorial appointment.
Governor Bryant will make appointments to fill out both terms which end in January of 2017. Likely his appointees will also seek election for the next eight year term, both of which will be decided in November of 2016. Conventional wisdom says Bryant’s appointees would be the frontrunners in both elections.
