Doctor offered $20,000 for attorney’s slaying

In an affidavit released by Attorney General Jim Hood, Detective Jeff Byars says well-known physician Dr. Arnold Smith allegedly offered $20,000 to kill attorney Lee Abraham.

Derrick Lacy, who was critically wounded in the Saturday night shootout at Abraham’s law office, allegedly told investigators prior to being taken to the hospital that he overhead Smith offer Keaira Byrd the money during a telephone conversation.

Seven months of investigation by the attorney general into the alleged murder-for-hire plot preceded the bloody and shocking events of this weekend. Now the physician and another suspect are behind bars, an alleged would-be-assassin is dead and another suspected shooter is in critical condition.
