Council may take $3.5M from Jackson reserve fund
The Jackson City Council may increase the city’s budget for the current fiscal year by more than $3.5 million – with nearly two-thirds going to the city’s Police Department and public transit system.
The proposal is expected to be discussed at today’s council meeting.
The additional money would come from the city’s “applied fund balance” – a reserve fund created from unspent dollars at the end of each fiscal year.
The JATRAN increase is necessary because of an arbitration decision last year that requires the city to pay owed wages to bus service workers.
