State treasurer upbeat on Mississippi’s future
State Treasurer Tate Reeves told a Republican audience Thursday that he is optimistic about the Mississippi’s future, despite the current economic situation that continues to negatively affect the state’s unemployment rate and budget.
Reeves was the guest speaker Thursday at the 35th annual Founder’s Day event at LaFont Inn in Pascagoula. Founder’s Day is the Jackson County Republican Women’s primary fundraising effort, and proceeds from the event go toward providing scholarships for Jackson County students.
Reeves said Mississippi is weathering the economic crisis better than other states. The state had built up its rainy day fund from $3 million in 2004 to $363.5 million in 2008, or 7 percent of the budget, according to Reeves.
He attributed the jump in the contingency fund to “good, strong leadership in office” under Republican Gov. Haley Barbour.
