Gov. Haley Barbour is taking steps to address the health insurance gap in Mississippi, particularly for those who work in small businesses. He said last week that he will propose legislation that would authorize a health insurance exchange for small businesses.
He also followed through with his campaign pledge to examine the state’s tax system from top to bottom. On Thursday he appointed Leland Speed, former director of the Mississippi Development Authority, to lead the comprehensive study group.
A health insurance exchange would allow small businesses to come together to buy insurance. By pooling their employees, they should get a break on insurance premiums, the governor said.
