On the heels of their debate last night at USM, Democrat AG Jim Hood and Republican Lt. Governor Tate Reeves launched new ads for release today.
The Tate Reeves ad focused on his $4,300 teacher pay plan to be phased in over three years without raising taxes.
Tate Reeves Ad
Transcript:
Teacher 1: I got into teaching because I want to change lives.
Teacher 2: Every day, I saw children blossom.
Tate Reeves: Most teachers don’t do it for the money, but we’ve gotta pay them more.
Narrator: The Tate Reeves plan: step up teacher pay by $4000 to the southern average, and double their budget for supplies without raising taxes.
Tate Reeves: We’ve made tough decisions. We’ve finally got our rainy day fund back in order. Now, we can raise teacher pay even more. And that’s what I’ll do.
Jim Hood Ad
Building on comments woven into his debate remarks last night, Jim Hood launched a negative ad that labeled Reeves as part of the political “swamp” and blamed Reeves for crumbling roads, underfunded teachers and closing hospitals. This is reminiscent of President Trump’s “drain the swamp” mantra in 2016. Trump has endorsed Reeves for governor.
