How Mississippi officials are reacting to the impeachment inquiry of President Trump

By: Sarah Ulmer - September 25, 2019

On Tuesday, U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced that the House will launch a formal impeachment inquiry against President Trump. Pelosi’s move to begin the formal process came months after pressure from the Democratic Party.

According to Fox News new allegations surrounding a now-controversial phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July, many have encouraged Pelosi to endorse the process. (Trump is under fire for allegedly pressuring Ukraine’s leader to investigate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, and using military aid as leverage — though the President vehemently denies the latter charge.)

In hearing the news of the looming investigation the President responded;

Since the announcement several Mississippi officials have also spoken out.

Governor Phil Bryant:

“The efforts to impeach President Trump continue to prove that Democrats would rather lead a witch hunt than address actual problems in our country. I support President Trump and believe he will continue to achieve great things for our nation despite these political games.”

Lt. Governor Tate Reeves (gubernatorial candidate)

AG Jim Hood (gubernatorial candidate)

Campaign did not provide comment upon request.

Congressman Steven Palazzo:

Congressman Steven Palazzo

“This is undoubtedly the lowest political attack I’ve witnessed since coming to Congress. Pelosi and her cronies have been waiting for this day since the moment President Trump was sworn into office. I fully believe President Trump has nothing to hide and that this investigation is a continuation of the liberal witch hunt against him. This is a sad day for our country.”

Congressman Michael Guest:

“Democrats in this Congress have repeatedly relied on unfounded claims to fulfill their desire of impeaching a president who was democratically elected by the American people.  I have little confidence that this inquiry is motivated by anything other than the political games that so many in the Democratic Party prefer over their responsibility to this nation. Americans deserve an infrastructure bill, immigration reform, and solutions to the opioid drug crisis.”

Congressman Bennie Thompson:

“I support the U.S. House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry. The President’s conversation with the Ukrainian officials was against the law. He requested that they investigate a United States citizen in an effort to help him steal another election. Additionally, the administration blocked the Inspector General from disclosing the whistleblower complaint. As a nation, we have no other alternative. We must protect our constitution and the United States of America’s national security. The President has abused his power, obstructed justice, and violated his oath of office. Moreover, the President of the United States of America should not put his political interests over our national security. No one is above the law. Therefore, he must be impeached and subsequently removed from office.”

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith:

“I’m disappointed, but not surprised, House Democrats have decided to undertake a divisive impeachment inquiry. It’s hard to overlook the fact that calls to remove President Trump started the minute he won the election, and the grasping at straws hasn’t ever stopped.” — U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.)

Former candidate for U.S. Senate, Mike Espy:
