MAE downplays Governor’s recommendation to raise teacher pay of $50 million over two years

The Mississippi Association of Educators has responded to the Governor’s newest budget recommendations for the fiscal year 2020, which would allocate $25 million dollars toward teacher pay raises per year for two years effective in July.

The MAE released a statement on social media about the political nature of the raises and their timing, but that the “gesture” is not going to quiet them.

This is not the first time the MAE has discussed the pay raise. In September, Y’all Politics reported that the MAE called the raises “election-year pandering” after MAE President Joyce Helmick released a video via Facebook speaking against the motive of the raises.

In the video, Helmick warns “but we’ve done our homework, and we’ve studied, and we’re saying ‘no, we’re not playing this game with you anymore.’ We want a pay raise and we want support for our public schools.”

The video came just after Lt. Governor Tate Reeves spoke of a potential pay raise in the upcoming legislative session.
