Congressman Thompson’s Statement on the Reopening of Emmett Till’s Case

By: Sarah Ulmer - July 16, 2018

Last week, U.S. Representative Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) released the following statement on the U.S. Department of Justice’s decision to reopen the cold case of Emmett Till:

“I’m pleased that the Department of Justice is reopening the case of Emmett Till,” Thompson said. “In a letter written in 2017, to Acting Assistant Attorney General Thomas Wheeler, I requested that the DOJ investigate the statements made by Carolyn Bryant Donham that she admitted to fabricating, in a book that outlined her accounts of the events leading up to the brutal murder of Emmett Till.”

“As Congressman of the Second Congressional District, I represent Tallahatchie County, which includes the area where the abduction and murder of Emmett Till took place. No matter the length of time, it is never too late to ensure justice is served. As the DOJ begins its investigation, I look forward to keeping an eye on its developments and aiding in any way I can.”
