Nurse practitioners ask for more authority to treat patients

At Tuesday’s meeting at the state Capitol, nurses advocated for allowing nurse practitioners to treat patients without having a collaborative agreement with a medical doctor. They said it would encourage more nurse practitioners to open clinics, particularly in rural areas, and improve access to health care, which is a problem in Mississippi.

In addition, generally speaking, nurse practitioners are reimbursed by Medicaid at about 85 percent of the fee provided to medical doctors.
