Mississippi Democratic Party Statement on President Obama’s State of the Union
Chairman Rickey Cole issued the following statement in reaction to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union:
“Tonight the President dedicated our nation to a renewed entrepreneurial spirit. He issued a bi-partisan call to remew our commitment to the American Dream. He challenged us by saying: ‘A growing economy that creates good, middle-class jobs – that must be the North Star that guides our efforts. Every day, we should ask ourselves three questions as a nation: How do we attract more jobs to our shores? How do we equip our people with the skills needed to do those jobs? And how do we make sure that hard work leads to a decent living?’
The President’s call for a national commitment to early childhood education should be welcome news to Mississippians. No state stands to benefit more from quality universal early education more than Mississippi. Our state desperately needs the investments proposed by the President in manufacturing, clean energy, infrastructure and education that will grow our economy and expand our middle class–the engine of our economic growth. And thousands of Mississippi workers deserve the honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work that a $9.00 per hour minimum wage represents.
Ours has traditionally been a opportunity society. The President has called loud and clear for us to rededicate ourselves to the expansion of opportunity for all Americans. Let everyone here in Mississippi heed his call.”
