Mississippi legislature convenes with education issues at forefront

Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and House Speaker Philip Gunn gaveled the Mississippi Legislature into session at noon amid a push for fundamental changes in the state’s education system but with little anticipated new revenue from a still-sluggish economy.

Legislators must craft a budget – likely about $5.54 billion – but charter schools and other education issues likely will dominate their 90-day session.
