Barbour revives offshore drilling push
BILOXI — Hurricane Katrina pushed the heated Mississippi offshore drilling issue to the back burner years ago, but as he prepares to leave office, Gov. Haley Barbour has instructed state officials to move forward with opening state water to exploration and drilling.
“Offshore oil and natural gas exploration and production will help us meet our nation’s energy needs, while generating jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for education and conservation here in Mississippi,” Barbour said Monday. “We continue to operate in a tight budget climate, and the revenues that leasing and subsequent exploration and production would generate will help create a more prosperous future for Mississippi.”
But not everyone agrees.
