Herring, overseeing Bryant transition, reflects on GOP gains

Jim Herring was having a good time watching from the sidelines as his beloved Republican Party made huge gains across the state following the Nov. 8 general election. Then he got the call.

Gov.-elect Phil Bryant wanted him to head his transition team.

Herring laughed, saying it was like someone had “thrown me back in the briar patch.”

Herring, a Canton attorney, former state Appeals Court judge and former Mississippi Republican Party chairman will oversee the team tasked with making sure the new administration has a smooth transition into office.

That involves everything from office coordination to dozens of appointments and even planning the traditional inauguration and parade early next month.

“It’s a huge undertaking,” Herring said. “I sort of view myself as the person overseeing all this and cheering them on.

“And if anything goes wrong it’s my fault,” he said.
