Turnout may be the key to Tuesday’s elections
As Tuesday’s election draws near, statewide candidates and political parties are focused on, and worried about, voter turnout.
A battle for an open governor’s seat; high-profile ballot initiatives on abortion, property rights and voter ID; and heated partisan battles for legislative seats are the driving forces of this year’s elections.
In the gubernatorial race between Republican Phil Bryant and Democrat Johnny DuPree, Bryant is the presumptive frontrunner, with a well-funded and televised campaign. But Bryant and the state GOP in recent days have voiced fears of Republican voter complacency. DuPree’s campaign and state Democratic leaders said they are keenly focused on turning out their voters.
