The Ag Commissioner’s race has really started to gain steam in the last couple of weeks. Money has started to flow into that race as maybe (along with the Treasurer’s race) the most competitive ticket on the ballot.
Yesterday, the Clarion Ledger endorsed Max Phillips.
Phillips ran for commissioner in 1995 and this marks his fifth race. He has doggedly pursued the post and groomed himself for the job.
A Taylorsville cattle farmer, Phillips has experience as an agricultural lender and taught agriculture in public schools – so he has experience in all facets: hands-on business, academics and finance.
He sees the need for innovation, promoting family farms, focusing on food safety, working with other state and national ag leaders and boosting local food markets.
There may be a role for the ag department in the 21st century. The challenge is keeping it relevant. Phillips is the best choice for ag commissioner on Tuesday.
Late yesterday afternoon, Cindy Hyde-Smith announced that Alabama’s Ag Commissioner had endorsed her.
Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is the right person to serve as the next Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture. I understand from my agribusiness friends that Cindy has been a champion for agriculture in Mississippi and I look forward to her joining a fine group of Southern Commissioners of Agriculture as we work together to promote and protect the interests of our respective agribusiness constituents. Cindy’s experience in the Senate, especially as chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, will serve her well and more importantly be a huge asset to her ability to “hit the ground running” as she assumes an important position in very challenging times.
This race will be a fun one to watch on election night.
