Ron Paul to speak on Barbour’s home turf

Potential presidential GOP candidate Ron Paul will travel to the home state of one of his potential rivals to deliver a speech next week.

The Texas congressman will appear next Friday* at Mississippi State Unviersity to discuss libertarian politics, according to the school. Haley Barbour (R) another potential candidates, is governor of the state.

*The Hill has one thing wrong. The event is April 20. Per the MSU press release:

Texas congressman, physician and former presidential candidate Ron Paul will discuss libertarian politics during an April 20 visit to Mississippi State.

Sponsored by the university chapter of Young Americans for Liberty, the program featuring Paul begins at 7 p.m. in Lee Hall’s Bettersworth Auditorium. A brief question-and-answer session with audience members will follow his presentation.

“Liberty Defined” will be the topic of his remarks.

Earlier, Paul will hold a 3:30-5 p.m. book signing at the Barnes & Noble at MSU Bookstore.

Senior management major Deepanshu Chhabra, a YAL chapter member and an organizer of the event, said the organization sponsored a two-month-long petition drive to request that Paul visit campus. The effort generated about 2,500 student signatures.

“We wanted to show him all the interest here for him to visit,” Chhabra said. “He’s very popular with the younger crowd.”

An outspoken critic of U.S. foreign and monetary policies, the 11-term congressman long has generated excitement among dedicated supporters for positions on drug laws, limited taxations and related issues. He has run for U.S. president as both a Libertarian and Republican Party candidate. (For more, visit www.paul.house.gov/.)

He has written a number of books, including the most recent “End the Fed” (Grand Central Publishing, 2009).

According to the American Journal of Political Science, Paul has the most conservative voting record of any member of Congress since 1937. In standing by his principles, he has tended to aggravate members of both the Republican and Democratic parties.

A national organization with college and high school chapters in each state, Young Americans for Liberty began as Students for Ron Paul, which promoted him as a presidential candidate in 2008.
