The West Virginia players and coaches have talked incessantly about this trip.
They have built up Saturday night’s matchup — at No. 15 LSU (3-0) in Baton Rouge — into a bowl game of sorts within the regular season.
But there is a careful-what-you-wish-for element for the No. 22 Mountaineers (3-0). When the sun goes down at Tiger Stadium, the lights often go out on LSU’s opponents.
Since 2000, LSU is 52-5 in night games at the 92,400-seat venue, and coach Les Miles is 25-1 in night games in Death Valley, his only loss coming last season against Florida.
Since 1960, the Tigers are 216-60-4 in games played at home at night, compared to a 21-26-3 record in day games over that same span.
There are some Big East Conference coaches who know precisely the challenge that will be staring at West Virginia coach Bill Stewart when he trots his troops onto that turf Saturday inside the country’s eighth-largest on-campus stadium.
South Florida coach Skip Holtz was an assistant for his father, Lou, when the elder was the head coach at South Carolina from 1999-2004. The Gamecocks went into Baton Rouge in 2002 and left as a victim, succumbing to that mystical bayou wrath, 38-14.
