Manning legacy was founded on years of futility

MIAMI — The losses piled up for quarterback Archie Manning and the woeful New Orleans Saints. Each season was like a prolonged nightmare. Each game took a harsh toll on his body.
He was the lovable loser cheered by fans despite the fact he never produced a winning record in 10 seasons.
“The worst year was 1980,” he said this week. “And that was the year we thought we’d do pretty good.”
The Saints went 1-15 that season. By the end, fans in the Superdome were wearing paper sacks over their faces. It was even harder for his family — wife Olivia, sons Cooper and Peyton — to watch.
