Auburn’s freshmen class long on potential, short on initial impact
AUBURN — When Gene Chizik was hired just over a year ago, he quickly had to build and maintain his first recruiting class by scouting players, convincing stragglers and hunting for new blood.
The result was a hastily assembled class that included 24 freshmen. Of the 18 who made it to campus, 11 played this season and seven took redshirts. Only a handful made a noteworthy impact.
As Chizik and his staff work toward signing the first recruiting class that is entirely their own, it’s worth revisiting the hodgepodge of youngsters who started their careers under the first-year coach.
