Bryant says state not going to ‘participate in the recession’
Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said Thursday night that Mississippi “refuses to participate in the recession” because of the state’s strong economic development and fiscal foresight.
Bryant delivered this message at Horn Lake Chamber of Commerce’s annual membership banquet at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.
He said that last year when he and Gov. Haley Barbour pushed for a rainy day fund, “some looked at us like we were crazy.”
“But we’re moving $60 million forward next year, based on this very stubborn belief of ours to store up for lean times.”
He pointed to GE Aviation, which has a plant in Batesville that produces composite-material parts for jet engines, as one of the reasons residents should be encouraged about future economic growth in the state.
“Like I said, this is one of the reasons we in Mississippi refuse to participate in the recession because of the wonderful economic development that companies like this are bringing here,” he said.
