House passes defense appropriations bill, coast closer to $500 million
The U.S. House has passed a large defense appropriations bill that also contains $439 million for restoring the Barrier Islands and $80 million for housing vouchers.
The funds were part of a $106 billion defense appropriation that cleared the House in a 226-202 vote Tuesday, despite 170 Republicans voting no and only 5 voting yes. Many, including one from Mississippi, objected to non-defense spending in the measure. The GOP opposition and some anti-war Democrats’ objections to war funding could pose a challenge as the bill heads to the Senate
U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper was the only Mississippi representative to vote no. Harper is also the state’s lone House Republican. U.S. Reps. Gene Taylor, Bennie Thompson and Travis Childers, all Democrats, voted for the bill.
