TUSCALOOSA – The NCAA alleged that the University of Alabama committed “potentially major” rules violations by “failing to monitor” its student-athlete textbook distribution system, and UA officials agreed.
But, according to documents released Thursday, Alabama administrators asked the NCAA to recognize that the athletes did not intend to commit a violation and that the university has since fixed the system. Alabama awaits the NCAA’s answer.
UA self-reported the violations and self-imposed penalties in response to misuse of the system by several athletes in several sports.
UA officials announced Thursday that they met with the NCAA Committee on Infractions in San Diego on Feb. 20. Alabama said that during the hearing officials discussed charges that it did not properly monitor a system that allowed students to obtain free textbooks for their friends.
