Jackson voters could decide in June whether to raise sales taxes to help pay for improvements to roads and public safety – under a bill that has cleared both chambers of the Legislature.
But another bill that would allow parts of Rankin County to come out from the county’s dry laws has stalled amid concerns some residents there won’t have a say in the matter.
Senate Bill 3268, which provides an optional sales tax for Jackson, appears headed to Gov. Haley Barbour for consideration. It cleared the House on Friday, one week after gaining approval in the Senate.
The bill lets Jackson seek voter support to add a 1 percent sales tax on all items except hotels, restaurants, groceries, prescription drugs and purchases of large equipment such as vehicles and farm equipment.
