Bills that supporters say will make it easier for nonprofit charities to operate in Mississippi while not sacrificing state government oversight are alive in both chambers of the Legislature.
Rep. Brian Aldridge, R-Tupelo, who runs the Lee County-based Touched by an Angel Ministries for people with special needs, said the legislation will help alleviate some of the paperwork requirements for small charities.
Aldridge was on a task force formed by Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann to make recommendations on how to revamp the charities laws. Hosemann’s office regulates Mississippi’s charities and publishes a report each year providing information to the public about charities.
Hosemann said the legislation “will give Mississippi citizens more transparency when it comes to choosing a charity. In these tough economic times, Mississippians deserve to trust who gets their charitable donations. This bill will give them the confidence they need to make educated choices in donating their hard-earned dollars.”
