Nothing certain in recruiting until the dotted line gets signed

Over the weekend, Auburn hosted two players committed to Tennessee, and Tennessee hosted two players committed to Auburn. Meanwhile, Alabama lost a player who had previously committed to the Tide to Southern Miss. But don’t feel bad for the Tide. Alabama is still going after several players who had earlier committed to other schools.
Do you get the impression that “commitment” doesn’t quite mean what it used to?
“I had this discussion with my grandson the other day,” said Grant Teaff, the executive director of the American Football Coaches Association. “He’s going into coaching, and he asked me about the ethics of recruiting a committed player, one that has committed to another school.”

According to Teaff, the AFCA’s Code of Ethics says that college football coaches “should not try to get a prospect to change his mind if he’s already made up his mind.”
