Rep. Gregg Harper was given seats on the House Judiciary Committee and on a panel with jurisdiction over House business Friday.
Harper, a Republican representing the 3rd District, was sworn in this week. He replaced Chip Pickering, who didn’t seek re-election. As a freshman member of the minority party in Congress, Harper had few opportunities to snare seats on important committees.
But the lawmaker, a lawyer, said he was pleased with his assignments on the Judiciary Committee and the Committee on House Administration. His duties will range from making sure lawmakers get their paychecks to organizing House mailings. In a statement, Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the highest-ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, welcomed Harper – and all other new GOP members – to the panel. He also outlined the Republican agenda on the Judiciary Committee.
