U.S. Attorney Jim Greenlee has asked to delay former Booneville attorney Joey Langston’s imprisonment because he is a crucial witness in an ongoing government investigation, U.S. District Court records show.
Filed Wednesday, the motion to delay reporting states, “It would be most helpful to have him available for personal conferences and telephone calls here in the Northern District of Mississippi.”
The motion further fuels speculation about the imminent revelation of a case that prosecutors say is their investigation into a conspiracy to bribe Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter of Hinds County.
Langston is due to report to a yet-to-be-specified federal prison by 2 p.m. Jan. 15 to begin a three-year term for his admitted part in the conspiracy.
In his guilty plea in January 2007, Langston said he, former attorney Richard “Dickie” Scruggs, former New Albany attorney Timothy Balducci and former state Auditor Steven Patterson worked a deal with former Hinds District Attorney Ed Peters for $1 million to persuade DeLaughter to help them in a legal-fees lawsuit against Scruggs.
