Obama’s plan could speed Miss. projects

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 26, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 11/26/8

Local officials hope President-elect Barack Obama’s plan to spend billions of dollars on local projects will speed dozens of sewer and road projects and pay for new police officers and other law enforcement help.

Many Mississippi cities have their project lists ready.

The list of local projects was submitted to the U.S. Conference of Mayors earlier this month to help lobby Congress for a stimulus package that would pour billions of dollars into public infrastructure projects in hopes of shoring up a faltering economy.

In announcing his economic team Monday, Obama backed the idea. He said he wanted Congress to begin work on the package when it convenes in January, but he provided few details about the proposed public works campaign.
