Elections give Mississippi Republicans reasons to gloat

Mississippi Republicans clearly are not as glum as their counterparts nationwide.

All in all, the Nov. 4 elections were good for Mississippi Republicans – except that Democrat Barack Obama won the presidency and Democrats strengthened their majorities in both the U.S. House and Senate.
Despite those setbacks, the state GOP has reason to smile.

“The Republican Party was very successful in Mississippi and many other states,” said Gov. Haley Barbour, who has been quoted extensively in the national media about what the Republicans need to do to make a comeback nationwide.

In Mississippi, the question is: What do the Democrats need to do?

“The Democratic Party has to be in depression. They will never find a way to turn out the African-American vote like they did in this election,” said Marty Wiseman, director of the Mississippi State University Stennis Institute of Government.
