Demand high for Obama’s swearing-in

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 14, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 11/14/8

Enthusiasm for President-elect Barack Obama’s swearing-in Jan. 20 has generated fierce competition for tickets for an event expected to draw 1 million people.

But those who want to attend Obama’s inauguration will face formidable obstacles. Although scalpers already are trying to make a fast dollar from the historic event, tickets to the inauguration haven’t been printed and won’t be distributed until a week before Obama’s swearing-in.

About 240,000 tickets will be divided among members of the 111th Congress so lawmakers can provide them – free of charge – to constituents.

According to Carole Florman, spokeswoman for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, each House member will receive about 200 tickets and each senator will get 300 to 400.
