Gov. Haley Barbour and legislative leaders approved a revenue estimate Tuesday that will give them only $39.2 million more to appropriate during the 2009 session than they had during the 2008 session.
The 14-member Legislative Budget Committee, which includes Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and House Speaker Billy McCoy, met with Barbour and agreed on a revenue estimate of $5.15 billion for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1.
The revenue estimate represents the amount of money that will be available to budget during the 2009 session. It was recommended to Barbour and the Legislative Budget Committee by the state’s financial experts.
While all agreed to accept the estimate, Barbour said, “I personally think it is too rosy…I question whether revenue will get to that level.”
