If the Republican Party was hoping to reclaim the 1st District House seat in the near future, its chances greatly diminished when Travis Childers won Tuesday’s general election.
The Democrat’s 10-point lead over Republican Greg Davis solidified his claim on the seat he had first grabbed from the GOP in May’s special election, held after Republican Roger Wicker stepped down to become a U.S. senator.
Childers now will serve two years as north Mississippi’s representative in Washington before facing his next political contest and another Republican challenger in 2010. And in Mississippi – just as in most states – voters rarely oust an incumbent, making the Republicans’ chances for a comeback that much harder.
“The Republicans got pounded pretty good,” said Lee County Republican County Chairman Mike Maynard. “We got our clocks cleaned.”
