Republican Thad Cochran, fresh off another convincing re-election victory to the United States Senate, hopes to play a calming influence during the presidency of Democrat Barack Obama.
Cochran, Mississipp’s senior senator, will be more in the minority because of Obama’s victory and gains by the Democrats in the House and Senate.
But the seemingly always amenable Cochran did not appear stressed out about that situation during a recent telephone interview.
“I am looking forward to doing what I can…to make sure we strike a balance,” said Cochran, who won his sixth term Tuesday with 62 percent of the vote against former state Rep. Erik Fleming, D-Jackson, in what has been described as record turnout.
Gov. Haley Barbour, who has served several stints in Washington, including as chair of the Republican National Committee, said Cochran is held in high regard by both Republicans and Democrats.
