BULLDOGS:’Dogs still haven’t found what they’re looking for
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Mississippi State and Tennessee both entered Saturday night’s clash looking for answers on offense.
Tennessee found something.
MSU is still looking.
In front of 98,239 – nearly 4,000 shy of Neyland Stadium capacity – the Volunteers slugged out a 34-3 win and earned their first SEC victory of the season.
Tennessee (3-4, 1-3 SEC) had a steady and balanced running attack, with Lenon Creer and Arian Foster combining for 108 of the Volunteers’ 139 rushing yards.
Sophomore quarterback Nick Stephens played a smart game in his third career start. He finished 10 of 20 for 136 yards and no interceptions, and he made some plays with his feet, too.
“Nick made some plays running the football, and I wouldn’t have bet on that in an SEC football game,” UT coach Phillip Fulmer said. “He continues to manage the game well and made some really nice throws tonight and played well for us.”
MSU couldn’t make plays at all. Coach Sylvester Croom cited three deep throws that quarterback Tyson Lee failed to make in the first half.
