The SEC’s least productive offense is making a change at quarterback.
Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said Monday that he expects Mackenzi Adams to start for the first time this season on Saturday at No. 10 Georgia.
“He’s a motivated young man, a go-getter and we think that maybe he’ll provide us a spark,” Johnson said on Monday. “Hopefully we can get some things going on offense.”
Adams replaces Chris Nickson for the 22nd-ranked Commodores, who are last in the SEC in total offense. Vanderbilt did not get a first down until 7:39 left in the second quarter and finished with 107 yards of total offense in a 17-14 loss at Mississippi State on Saturday.
Adams, a 6-foot-3 redshirt junior, played extensively in Georgia’s 20-17 win in Nashville last season, completing 7 of 10 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 46 yards on 14 carries.
Adams helped lead Vanderbilt to a comeback win over Auburn on Oct. 4. Both Nickson and Adams have played in every Vanderbilt game this season.
“I think Mackenzi has demonstrated that he can sit in the pocket, figure things out and see who’s open and do a good job of hitting them,” Johnson said.
