Ole Miss quarterback struggling, but coach Houston Nutt confident
OXFORD, Miss. — Two days removed from what Ole Miss offensive coordinator Kent Austin described as an “education” provided by Vanderbilt’s defense, sophomore quarterback Jevan Snead on Monday faced more pressure, this time from reporters.
Had he ever thrown four interceptions before?
“I don’t believe I have,” he said.
Was he guilty of trying to do too much?
“I think that was part of it,” he said.
What did he do after the game?
“I went straight home,” he said.
For 10 minutes, Snead stayed in the pocket and handled the heat. He was not quite so composed during Saturday’s 23-17 loss to Vanderbilt, which splashed some cold water on the hype-fest that had accompanied his strong start to the season. But one dreadful outing — in Snead’s Southeastern Conference debut, no less — does not a season make, according to coach Houston Nutt.
“He’s going to get better and better and better,” Nutt said. “I know he is. It’s just about going back out there and working a little bit harder, concentrating a little bit better and expecting some different things.”
Ole Miss (2-2, 0-1 SEC) can expect even more of a challenge at fourth-ranked Florida (3-0, 1-0) on Saturday. The Gators have limited opponents to 213 yards of total offense per game, tops in the SEC. The Rebels, meantime, have committed 11 turnovers in their last three games. Make those kinds of mistakes against Florida and quarterback/ golden boy Tim Tebow?
