Ex-Aquinas QB Carroll makes himself at home
Two years ago, Mississippi State sophomore quarterback Wesley Carroll was at the heart of one of the most memorable games ever played at Dolphin Stadium, the 2006 Class 5A state championship game.
It was an improbable ending to a high school football game between Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas and the Lakeland Dreadnaughts. Carroll, then the quarterback for St. Thomas, led the Raiders in a logic-defying comeback (35 points in six minutes) against Lakeland only to lose in double overtime. Two highlights from the game made ESPN’s Top 10 plays of the day.
Believe it or not, what happened to Carroll after that might have been more unrealistic.
Mississippi State was the only SEC school to offer Carroll a scholarship. He ended his freshman as the Bulldogs’ starter and led the struggling program up the SEC West standings with wins against Auburn, Alabama and Ole Miss.
Carroll then beat Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl and ended the season as a member of the all-SEC freshmen team. On Wednesday, Carroll wore his Liberty Bowl ring with pride.
