Michael Strahan to Giants: Don’t trade Jeremy Shockey

Michael Strahan says Giants would be ‘crazy’ if they trade Jeremy Shockey (and makes Sunday’s early back page in the process).
Michael Strahan may be “stressing” out, as he said Saturday, over his decision whether to return to the Giants in 2008, but there is no doubt in his mind he wants Jeremy Shockey on the team.
In the hours leading up to Saturday’s NFL draft, Strahan told the Daily News at an autograph signing in Westchester that it would be “crazy” for the Giants to trade Shockey, their high-energy, lightning-rod tight end.
The Giants were in talks with the Saints in the weeks before the draft about Shockey, but ultimately balked at New Orleans’ last offer Saturday – though that doesn’t mean he won’t be traded at some point before the season starts. Saints coach Sean Payton was Shockey’s offensive coordinator for most of his rookie year in 2002, and Shockey loved playing in Jim Fassel’s offense, which used him more as a receiver than blocker. His role has reversed in Tom Coughlin’s offense.
“Of course I want him back. I love him,” Strahan said Saturday morning at Last Licks in Thornwood. “He’s a great teammate, great player, a hard worker.”
