Voter ID: Contentious issue needs to be settled

By: Magnolia Tribune - March 27, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 3/27/8

There is a glimmer of hope that a rare compromise might be developing between divided state legislators over the highly controversial, partisan and racially charged issue of requiring identification to vote.

Lawmakers should seize this rare opportunity, give a little to get a little and settle this contentious issue once and for all.

Voter fraud involving people misrepresenting themselves is a question in itself. There have not been that many cases actually documented. Mississippi has more problems in other areas, such as out-of-date voting rolls and absentee ballots.

Still, it is an issue. Living in a world where an ID is required for many basic business functions, supporters don’t understand the problem of presenting an ID to vote.
