“Tomorrow represents a sort of morning in Mississippi,” Jackson said.
Jackson had just returned to Chicago after doing an “Bloody Sunday” observance march at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in rememberance of the attack on civil rights marchers in 1965. He talked of the change in Mississippi and the South.
“Mississippi has gone through a long night, but it is emerging. Now we see a new and different Mississippi and a new America,” he said.
He said there remains much to be done and why the “leadership to get us there” is important.
“We are becoming more mature. We are growing as a nation,” Jackson said, adding that the election is showing men will vote for a female candidate and whites will vote for a black candidate.
“They are a conduit, an expression of that, a conduit for change,” he said of the Democratic candidates.
